Chanting is a wonderful way to reconnect to your true essence, one of heart-felt joy, peace and calm. This is the yoga of sound - meditation with music.
About Kirtan

Kirtan is not about being a good singer. It’s about joining your voice with others, allowing the music and mantras* to carry you into stillness, joy and deep connection - connection with your inner self, with those around you and with something greater than yourself, whatever that means to you. You can think of chanting as meditation with music, it is a deeply nourishing practice that helps calm the mind, relaxes the body and gently shifts your energy and awareness to a place of inner peace and joy, just like meditation.

Whether you chant softly, sing out loud, or simply listen and feel, you’re welcome exactly as you are.

We chant in Sanskrit, the oldest language in the world and the language of yoga, in a call-and-response fashion - simply repeating the words and tune of the leader, accompanied by a harmonium and often a drum. No need to understand the meaning or get the words or pronunciation correct, just tune into the feel and vibration of the mantra*.

*A mantra is a sound, word or phrase that is repeated in meditation or kirtan to help focus the mind, open the heart and awaken deep states of awareness. Drawn from ancient Sanskrit texts, these mantras (???are often names or qualities of the divine - whatever your belief, however, we can relate to them through) have universal themes like peace, love, compassion, or strength. When we chant them in Kirtan, we’re not just singing words, we’re inviting those qualities into our own experience.

The repetition of mantra helps quiet mental chatter, regulate the nervous system and create a sense of unity - within ourselves and with those around us. Whether you understand the language or not, the vibration of the sound itself has a powerful effect and you may find yourself feeling more centred, uplifted, or deeply peaceful.

Each Kirtan evening is an invitation to:

🎶 Awaken the heart through sound, music and mantra
🕯️ Sit in community and shared intention
🌿 Let go of stress and mental chatter
💖 Access states of peace, joy and calm
🕉️ Connect to something greater - however you define it

Whether you come for the music, the meditation, or the shared energy - Kirtan has a way of meeting you right where you are and accepting and welcoming you just as you are. You can sit on the floor (bring a comfy cushion) or on a chair. No experience is necessary—just come with an open mind and an open heart.

“Chanting is a way of getting in touch with yourself. It’s a way of opening your heart and finding your own inner strength, your own inner peace.”
