Yoga for Charity

Using yoga to help others

*£17,624* raised in total so far!!!

Yoga teaches us non-violence and compassion - it has love, acceptance and peace at its very core. Let's use yoga to help make a difference.

At the end of each term, I hold a Charity Week where I pass on the proceeds from my week's classes, together with extra donations, to different charities (listed below). The idea for these Charity Weeks came to me when sitting in meditation - ideas often pop up when meditating, when the mind is still and has space, clear from the everyday chatter and busy'ness. I could never have dreamt we would reach such a wonderful rolling total. Thank you!

Giving back through yoga - what a wonderful way to show gratitude for all that we have!

Thank you to all who came to class in our Charity Week, last week of the Spring Term 2025. Together, we raised a fantastic £849 for this wonderful charity. This adds to our rolling total raised for the Royal Marsden which now stands at £7681!! THANK YOU!!!

The Royal Marsden Hospital is very close to my heart as it is where my dear Dad passed away and it was his passing, together with my own cancer diagnosis, that led me to re-evaluate my life and train to become a Yoga Teacher. The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity is a world-leading cancer centre which pioneers new treatments that saves lives. They use their research every day to provide the very best in diagnosis, treatment and care for their patients and they care for 50,000 patients each year. Visit their website to find out how the money raised is spent www.royalmarsden.org.

The collection from Christmas 2023 was in memory of Sarah Mandow who used to attend my classes and really loved her yoga. She had lots of treatment at the Marsden and was a firm supporter of all they do. My collections are also in memory of Kim who also attended my classes but sadly passed away in one of the covid lockdowns.

Xmas Term 2024, I chose Friends of PICU charity. I chose it as the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit at Southampton Children’s Hospital saved my great-nephew's life and the charity have been an amazing support to my niece and her family. Born on the 5th September 2024, my niece's son had to have an 8-hour open-heart surgery when he was just 11 days old and then further surgery at the beginning of December and more surgery in January 2025. His name is Jack and he's gorgeous!! The money we raised will help other families at such an incredibly difficult time.

Here is Jack - pictures shown with his parents' permission.

Hampton & Hampton Hill Voluntary Care is a fantastic charity - based at The Greenwood Community Centre in Hampton Hill, where I teach most of my yoga classes. It has provided hundreds of thousands of hours of support to local people over the years, especially to those experiencing loneliness & social exclusion. They provide: befriending; social activities; community transport (volunteer car transport to doctors, hospitals and minibus shopping trips); an excursion programme; as well as managing the Greenwood Community Centre. Money we raise for this charity can provide welfare parcels to people's doorsteps, it can cover telephone costs which reach out to isolated people, it will help fund many of the services run by the centre as well as help maintain the actual building. Those who come to my classes know that a new roof is currently needed. PLEASE HELP!

Summer 2023 saw me raise money for this charity. I donated money from my classes from the last week of term and also sold these beautiful handmade lavender eye pillows - made by one of my students. Then in November 2023 I held a special "Restore and Recharge" fundraising afternoon with fellow yoga teacher Sally Rowland to raise money for The Greenwood Centre, in total we raised £515!

DEC Turkey-Syria Earthquake Appeal
£937 raised - thank you!

A series of devastating earthquakes have hit southern Turkey and north-west Syria killing at least 44,000 people and affecting over 18 million. People have been left without shelter in freezing winter conditions. Children have become orphans. Access to clean water will likely be a challenge, bringing the risk of cholera and other diseases. DEC charities and their local partners are among the first responders, working with locally-led relief efforts to ensure people have food and clean water. People need help now. Please donate.

I am delighted to be able to use my yoga teaching to raise money and awareness to help others. Spear is a charity, based in Twickenham, SW London, which does amazing work to support people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness and helps them into accommodation, education, training and employment. Spear's mission is "To enable people experiencing homelessness in South and West London to find secure accommodation and work towards a positive future." Visit their website to find out more www.spearlondon.org. I firmly believe everyone deserves the safety and security of their own home and the opportunity to fulfil their hopes and ambitions. I am deeply grateful for everything that I have in my life but so aware of the deep inequalities that exist in life.

My Charity Week in Spring 2022 raised money for the DEC (Disasters Emergency Committee) Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal. It's unthinkable to know what's going on in Ukraine right now. More than 10 million people have fled their homes to escape conflict in Ukraine, leaving behind jobs, belongings and loved ones, they need shelter, food and water. Thank you to everyone who came to class or donated directly (or both). A fantastic £1318 was raised! Click here to read about DECs Ukrainian appeal.

Hampton Hill Defibrillator Fund
£614 raised!
Thank you!

Picture
In July 2019 I happened to be aware of a local fundraising effort to raise money for the installation of life-saving defibrillators in the Hampton Hill area. I decided, therefore, to break away from my usual charities and chose this as my fundraising cause. I am delighted to say that my Charity Week, Summer term 2019, raised a fantastic £614 for this very worthy cause. A huge thank you to everyone who came to class and donated. There are now 3 defibrillators installed in Hampton Hill, SW London.
